What’s Going On With Apple Stock Thursday?

Aug 20, 2026

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) stock was little changed Thursday as investors weighed weakness across the broader market. The Nasdaq fell 0.49%, while the S&P 500 declined 0.38%.

Market breadth also remained weak, with an advance-decline ratio of 0.6. Apple’s relative stability suggests investors are holding their positions rather than making a fresh momentum bet.

Thursday’s action appears tied largely to broader market positioning rather than a company-specific catalyst. Energy gained 1.48%, while seven of the 11 major sectors traded lower.

The defensive tone extended across major indexes. The Russell 2000 fell 1.19%, while the Dow declined 0.81%. Technology was little changed and ranked fourth among the 11 sectors.

Munster Sees Apple As An Underappreciated AI Play

Meanwhile, investors continue to assess Apple’s artificial intelligence opportunity.

On Wednesday, Deepwater Asset Management Managing Partner Gene Munster told CNBC that Apple remains an underappreciated AI opportunity. He said the company’s more cautious approach and stronger safeguards could help differentiate it from rivals.

Munster called Apple “one of the biggest underappreciated companies” among mega-cap stocks. He said Apple has “finally got it right” with Siri and believes the stock could be “re-rated” as Siri becomes a foundation for personalized AI.

Munster said testing the Siri beta convinced him that Apple has made meaningful progress. Deepwater research shows fewer than 20% of U.S. iPhone owners use Siri daily, leaving significant room for adoption to grow.

He expects investors to place a higher valuation multiple on Apple over the next year as confidence in its AI strategy improves, even if earnings growth remains modest.

Technical Analysis

Apple remains above its major moving averages. The stock is about 0.2% above its 20-day simple moving average of $315.78 and 2.1% above its 50-day SMA of $309.96. It also trades 12.5% above its 200-day SMA of $281.33.

The 20-day average remains above the 50-day average. In addition, the 50-day average has remained above the 200-day average since a golden cross formed in September 2025. Those signals support the longer-term bullish trend.

The relative strength index stands at 53.73. That neutral reading suggests Apple is neither overbought nor oversold.

Traders may watch $335 as a key resistance level near the upper end of the recent range. Support sits around $300.50, close to the psychologically important $300 level.

Analyst Outlook

Apple trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of 36.3, reflecting a premium valuation. The stock carries a Buy consensus rating with an average price forecast of $329.53.

Jefferies downgraded Apple to Underperform on Aug. 10 and lowered its price forecast to $263.66. China Renaissance downgraded the stock to Hold on Aug. 4 with a $280 price forecast. JPMorgan maintained an Overweight rating on July 31 but lowered its price forecast to $340.

Benzinga Edge Rankings

Apple’s Benzinga Edge scorecard shows strong Momentum and Quality scores but weak Value.

Momentum stands at 79.75, while Quality scores 97.99. Growth is more moderate at 40.05. However, Apple’s Value score is just 4.8, highlighting its premium valuation.

Overall, the rankings point to a stock supported by momentum and business quality. However, its valuation leaves less room for execution setbacks.

Top ETF Exposure

Apple carries a 9.96% weighting in the Columbia Research Enhanced Core Premium Income ETF (NYSE:RECI). It represents 9.83% of the iShares S&P 100 ETF (NYSE:OEF) and 9.57% of the Xtrackers Net Zero Pathway Paris Aligned U.S. Equity ETF (NYSE:USNZ).

Apple’s large weighting means flows into or out of these funds can translate into buying or selling of the stock.

Price Action

AAPL Price Action: Apple shares were down 0.02% at $316.78 at the time of publication Thursday, according to Benzinga Pro data.
